In the wake of a widespread global outage affecting Meta-owned social media platforms Facebook and Instagram on Tuesday night, Elon Musk took the opportunity to throw a subtle jab at Meta, showcasing the reliability of his platform 'X' (formerly known as Twitter), which continued to function smoothly during the outage. In a post on 'X', Musk humorously declared, "If you’re reading this post, it’s because our servers are working." The Tesla CEO also shared a meme featuring a statement from Meta's Communications Director Andy Stone, acknowledging the ongoing issue and assuring users of active efforts to resolve it.
Social media users worldwide reported difficulties accessing various Meta platforms during the outage. Users on 'X' expressed frustration, detailing login issues on Facebook and other platforms. The DownDetector website displayed a surge in outage reports, with over 14,857 users encountering problems on Facebook and 32,518 users facing issues with Instagram during the service interruption, which began around 8:30 pm in India.
The outage wasn't limited to India, as the DownDetector map revealed disruptions in major cities globally, including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Ahmedabad. The impact extended beyond India, affecting users in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Brazil, and even Nepal. Complaints flooded in about Facebook and Facebook Messenger being inaccessible.
Despite the inconvenience faced by Meta users, the outage was relatively short-lived, and services on Facebook and Instagram were restored within an hour. While the disruption garnered global attention, it also served as an amusing moment for Elon Musk to highlight the stability of the 'X' platform under his ownership.
