Beloved radio host Ameen Sayani, who was 91, passed away from a heart attack, as his son Rajil Sayani confirmed on Wednesday. Despite being rushed to HN Reliance Hospital in Mumbai, he couldn't be revived, and his funeral is set for Thursday.
Born on December 21, 1932, in Mumbai, Ameen Sayani was cherished across generations. He started his broadcasting career in English and later shifted to Hindi after India gained independence.
Ameen Sayani became a national sensation through his famous radio show 'Geetmala,' which played a crucial role in making radio popular throughout India. Hosting Geetmala, he presented beloved Hindi film music, captivating audiences for decades. His trademark greeting, addressing listeners as "Behno aur Bhaiyo" (sisters and brothers), became widely recognized and imitated.
Over his impressive six-decade career, Ameen Sayani created and hosted 54,000 radio programs and lent his voice to 19,000 advertisements and jingles. Going beyond radio, he also explored acting, taking on modest roles in various films, often playing the part of an announcer. Ameen Sayani's diverse contributions have left a lasting legacy in the realms of both radio and entertainment.
